The drug, which contains sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, belongs to a group of medicines known as sulfonamides. Bactrim acts by preventing the growth of bacteria.
While taking bactrim, always follow your doctor’s direction as the drug comes with severe side effects. Bactrim should be taken with food or milk to avoid stomach upset. The medication should be taken in its full course for getting complete relief of the infections. Never stop the drug in the middle of a dosage as there are chances for the infections to relapse. Moreover, never go for more doses and also never take the drug for longer periods unless the physician has recommended.
Once you know that the doctor is going to prescribe bactrim, tell him about all you health problems so that he may be able to take a proper decision on the medication. Your doctor should know if you have any allergies to any particular drug, food or substance an also if you have any problems of the liver, kidney or heart.
The doctor should also know about all the medicines that you are using as certain drugs are known to interact with Bactrim. Pregnant women should only take bactrim after discussing with the doctor about all the risks and complications of using the drug during that period. However, the drug is not prescribed during the 38th week of pregnancy and in the later stages.
