Augmentin is an antibiotic which is available in the form of oral tablets in two strengths - 500mg and 875mg.
What is it used for?
The key ingredient is a mixture of clavulanate potassium and amoxicillin that combats a variety of bacterial infections like sinusitis, pneumonia, bronchitis, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Physicians may prescribe it for other uses not discussed in this guide.
Dosage
ADULTS AND CHILDREN (OVER 40KG IN WEIGHT): Usually the dose is 500mg taken at 12 hourly intervals, or 250mg taken at 8 hourly intervals. In the case of severe infections, a physician may prescribe 875mg taken at 12 hourly intervals, or 500mg taken at 8 hourly intervals.
While it is not essential to take doses with food, the maximum absorption rate is achieved when taken before eating a meal. To lessen the risk of gastro related irritations, all doses should be taken before eating a meal.
Your physician will prescribe the appropriate dose for you. After a few days you may be feeling better but do not stop taking your medication. It is vital that you complete the full course. Early termination can result in serious problems.
Potential Side Effects
THE FOLLOWING SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS SHOULD BE REPORTED TO A PHYSICIAN: Allergic reaction (symptoms are labored breathing, rash, hives or swelling), jaundice, bloody or watery diarrhea, dark colored urine, confusion, weakness, severe skin rash, tingling (or numbness), convulsions, weak muscles, confusion, behavior changes, clay colored stools, agitation, severe stomach pain, fever, lack of appetite, headache, or fever.
LESS SERIOUS SIDE EFFECTS: mild diarrhea, mild nausea or vomiting, mild skin rash or itching, white patches in the mouth or vaginal yeast infection, or headache. In the majority of cases these are only temporary and should fade away after a couple of days.
What about pregnancy and breast feeding?
Augmentin is unlikely to cause harm to a newborn or unborn baby. Breastfeeding mothers should consult with a physician because this drug affects breast milk.
Precautions and Warnings
Augmentin may not react favorably with other medicines so you must inform your physician about all medications, remedies and supplements that you frequently use.
Also tell your physician if you have had mononucleosis, liver or kidney problems, or if you have had a bad reaction to similar antibiotics.
Augmentin could be related to a potentially fatal condition known as pseudomembranous colitis. Although the likelihood is extremely rare, you should contact a physician right away if you have severe stomach cramps or pain, severe and persistent diarrhea, or if your stools contain blood or mucus. These symptoms may be associated with pseudomembranous colitis.
If you break out in a rash, even a mild one, be sure to tell your physician. A rash could be linked to an allergic reaction, so it is extremely important to have it checked out before you continue treatment with Augmentin.
Many elderly people have diminished kidney function and could therefore be sensitive to this drug. Augmentin leaves the system through the kidneys.
Storage
Store in a safe place where children and domesticated pets cannot access the medication. Storage temperature should be 59 to 860F or 15 to 300C. Never store in a bathroom because of exposure to dampness.
